Viking 1/2

The Viking mission used two spacecraft, Viking 1 and Viking 2, to study Mars. Each spacecraft consisted of an Orbiter and a Lander. Viking 1 launched on August 20, 1975 and entered Mars orbit on Mars on June 19, 1976. Viking 2 launched September 9, 1975 and entered Mars orbit on August 7, 1976. After the Landers detached from the Orbiters, the Orbiters continued imaging and other scientific operations. The Viking mission objectives included high resolution imaging of the Martian surface and characterizing the structure and composition of the atmosphere and surface.
